Elections are run by the states in the U.S., not the federal government. Trump's capacity to rig elections is far less than Orban's.

Cancelling the midterms is impossible. There is zero mechanism for him to do so. Midterms are run by the states and he has zero way of enforcing such a cancellation on a state that doesn't comply.

He can't purge voter rolls because those are done by states. He can't criminalize the opposition because of the more independent judiciary. He has no mechanism to stop the swearing in of congress members.

There are some advantages American democracy has over the others. More robust civil society, more independent court system, and more autonomous state governments.

We are nowhere near Putin territory yet. America has more decentralized government, a more independent judiciary, and a more robust civil society to oppose the regime.

I'm certain we'll still have midterms. There is zero mechanism towards cancelling midterm elections given they're all run at the state level.
