Preferring postcards, but we're also on social media. Passionate about catalysis for organic chemistry and funky molecules @TU Chemnitz (Germany).
What a way to kick off the fall term! We had the pleasure of hosting John Molloy from MPI Golm at TU Chemnitz this week. Truly inspiring chemistry revolving around Boron-containing molecules and radicals coming out of his lab.
Found the time for a sunset picture with Kalle as well...

We have just published a short overview article explaining the concepts copper catalysys with bifunctional ligands published recently. @synlettjournal.bsky.social.

It's a short read, check it out here: www.thieme-connect.com/products/ejo...

Proud to share a true science story. We got inspired by our friends from the Dielmann lab in Innsbruck and joining the pieces together in a new NHC ligand has opened up copper hydride chemistry at low H2 pressure 🎈 for the first time. And new reactivity on top:

Interested in bifunctional NHC ligands?
We have developed a library approach to some N-heterocyclic carbenes with hydrogen bond donors in the backbone. Check out the preprint here:

Are you interested in a PhD combining asymmetric transition metal catalysis and data-driven analysis?

We have two PhD positions as part of the EU network CATALOOP (cataloop.eu) that are open to apply:

Also check out the openings in the groups of the other PIs involved.

The catalysis subgroup has been quite active lately... Here are two preprints in the field of ligand design and bifunctional catalysis with H2:

1. on site-selective amide hydrogenation

2. Cu-catalyzed hydrogenations at 1 bar enabled by a bifunctional NHC ligand.

Two smiling, one grumpy...

Very happy about having had Daniel Werz from Freiburg visit us in our GDCh colloquium in Chemnitz yesterday. Fantastic chromophore chemistry 🧪.

Yesterday we had @johanneswalker.bsky.social from Göttingen as a speaker in #CHEMnitz. Great work on strained hydrocarbons - in a competitive field! Looking forward to the new results coming up from the group!

Thinking back to the #StöckhardtLecture a couple of weeks back. I think it is great not only for students but also for the researchers to have an truely inspiring talk. This one by Ben Feringa really stood out and it certainly filled up our "science enthusiasm battery".

Good to have the lecture seasong running again!

Last week we had Irena Stará and Ivo Stary (IOCB Prague) as visitors in Chemnitz and heard a very scholarly presentation about helicenes by Irena. Thanks for coming over from Prague!

We have recently published a concept article on chiral bifunctional catalysts. This is something we had been working on for a while...
Asymmetric hydrogenation/reduction of ketones with copper(I)/NHCs equipped with guanidines.

Those were exciting 10 days of molecular science at TU Chemnitz with talks by Urs Gellrich, Mike Haley and - as topping - the 2023 Liebig Lectureship by Paul McGonigal!

Thanks to all of you! Karl was grumpy as ever...
