I am confused. Your title mentions multinomial independent variables, and then you discuss "questions about different experiences in the healthcare system" (implying multiple questions), and then "this variable is dichotomized" sounds like a single variable, and nothing multinomial about that. Can you please explain just what your indepedent and dependent variables are? This also reminds me of Davis' argument (I know you know):
I don't know, but my guess is this: successful theories in the life sciences (e.g., Darwinian evolution, learning theory, economics, Downs' 1957 theory of party competition) center on attempts by an actor to maximize some single something (gene survival, rewards, utility, votes). But groups, other than commodity traders and political parties, either maximize many things or just sit there and don't maximize anything. And if we downshift from groups to individuals, it is unlikely we can beat psychology or economics at the individual actor basic theory game.

"The consequence of methodological advance, then, is a prestige grading of facts which does not have anything much to do with whether the facts are true or not. The same social causes show up over an over again in our various methods, and so the old facts were usually just as true as the new ones. But since one’s professional reputation depends on the prestige of the facts one uses, we have to reinvent substantive sociology approximately every ten years, to keep up with most modern methods, without actually discovering anything except that our old knowledge was more robust than we might have feared."

Il portait en 1956-1957 sur « Le principe du fondement » : Der Satz vom Grund. Heidegger s’exprimait d’une voix monocorde, mais manifestait un vrai talent d’acteur. Avec une impressionnante habileté rhétorique, il créa le suspense en faisant défiler pour les rejeter successivement divers sens du mot Satz en allemand (phrase, mouvement musical, etc.). Par plaisanterie, nous avions parié, un ami berlinois et moi, contre un ami mexicain (qui devait ensuite devenir ambassadeur du Mexique près la République démocratique allemande, aujourd’hui défunte), que Heidegger irait jusqu’à évoquer le marc de café (Kaffeesatz).
