That looks quite nice. There is a loss of ”spikiness” on complex surfaces because the texture is getting elongated. Maybe you can use some sdf like texture so that you can control the spikes based on how steep the normals are.

You could look into the term “matcap” it’s whats used for shading things in the viewports of blender, zbrush etc… Basically it’s mapping a texture to the screen normals of the object as if that image was spherical.
