We did a short campaign where the DM let us make monster race characters. I made an intelligent mimic that was raised and experimented with by a wizard. They were trained to occupy an empty failed automaton and served as their caretaker until the wizard died. Here's Finley.

I have tons of characters, but these are the ones that have actually gotten to be used in a campaign. Baefi, gob-ling bard. Laisren, elf druid. And Finley, automaton barbarian. (Actually an intelligent mimic nested inside the husk of an automaton. Was for a monster character campaign.)

Baefi got started out because I'd gotten a pretty set of copper and blue metal dice, and I wanted a character to go with them. I love tieflings, but wanted her to be smol. So, tiefling-gobbo! She is very much an outlet for my more outgoing and chaotic side.
