I'm pretty sure it's only a 5 star average because that's the only rating I save on Storygraph

If you're a Brandy Sandy fan, this is a must-read. The stories are funny, interesting, and so compelling I'm genuinely sad I won't get to read a full-length novel for it.

This felt very nolstagic to the Twilight era of vampire teen romance. Lore attends a private school in a renovated manor house and awakens the world's last vampire. Shenanigans ensue.

A great reads for kids grades 5 & up (and for any adults *cough* me *cough* who liked shows like Eerie Indiana or So Weird growing up). Shusterman does a fantastic job creating creepy, speculative stories.

A book for all the SCP Foundation girlies out there. Definitely give this a read if you liked R. L. Stine's The Haunting Hour, Don't Think About It, or the concept of the false hydra in D&D.

I cannot recommend this enough. If you want more historical black characters in a narrative that doesn't focus on pain and trauma but also doesn't shy away from the reality of the past, this is a great book.

Lovecraftian horror meets an action adventure narrative set in the Jim Crow south. There's a lot of myth-building and lore blended into real-world events that creates a kind of alternate history that manages to be both heartbreaking and also fun.

Book one, The Witch Roads was one of my favorite books this past year and I am so hoping we get more out of this incredible world full of mutation-inducing fungus, body-possessing spirits, and long-dead sorcerers.

This has a very specific vibe. Like if you like The Luminous Dead (lesbian horror novel by Caitlin Starling) and also The Owl House, you are going to eat this one up.

This book was not about an alien romance like I thought (no idea why I thought that). It's more like a hallmark movie with a ghost. Since it's going to be a movie, if you like that kind of movie, this might be for you. It wasn't for me.

If you're a fan of fairy-tale-inspired works, you'll like this. If you watched the TikTok series, you'll adore this. Since I'm both, I thoroughly enjoyed this romp through wild and weird folk tales from all over the world.

Why does Facebook suck, why is the internet a cesspool of ads, bots, and greed? This convincing narrative history of the internet, the rise of the Enshittocene, as Doctorow would say, is here to explain and offer solutions.

This was my first Octavia Butler book. I think it altered my brain chemistry. Cannot recommend this series enough and I will never stop being sad that Butler never got the chance to finish it.

I do think that more people should give this book a read. It helps to bridge that gap in our understanding of antifascism in America between World War II and now. It's unfortunate that this book focuses on the lead into fascism because we're a bit past that now.

3.5/5 stars. Victorian Psycho succeeds in capturing an American Psycho meets penny dreadful atmosphere. It’s Jane Eyre meets Lizzie Borden. Our protagonist, Winifred, is truly psychotic. And the ending is gorey, over-the-top, and disturbingly satisfying.

3.5/5 stars. It's The Proposal but gay. Very fun. While essentially a roommates to lovers tale, Reyes isn't shying away from the horrors of immigration. Some minor pacing issues but overall a great romcom.

I'll have to post a picture of the cover some time because 🤌Nnedi Okorafor never ceases to tell a story that is so thought-provokingly original that it keeps you thinking about it for days after.
