Mme pulled her phone out too late for a photo of an deeply dark, white-fronted & currant-eyed squirrel.

But there, in the grass, only a metre away & also watching alongside Mme, Happy Dog & Dog's Young Lad was an orange cat - apparently unnoticed by the dog, not too pleased at being spotted by Mme.

Remembering a place we happened upon at Chasseneuil-sur-Bonnieure in Charente.

Among the 2255 graves at the resistance memorial & military cemetery are those of the Bir Hacheim Maquis & Muslims who fought with the allied forces during WW2.

(Our photo sadly out of focus, so this one c/o MdeD).

Passing a front garden, a huge shrub called us to a halt; a sudden patch of vivid colour on one of Roath's clouded grey and dusk-dark streets.

Tried a new stumbled-across-online dish last week, it's a keeper. Milk Street's Greek-style braised chickpeas with tomatoes & orange. Admit to upping the orange content & more stock for our taste & work better with rice, Bold Bean Co's Queen Chickpeas made it. www.177milkstreet.com/recipes/gree...

Two photos, same place, less than 30 secs apart.

It might be changeably wet & blustery outside but we've sunshine inside, courtesy of Mami Maggie's West African dishes, Fabrizio's Sicilian panelle & Sophia's Greek pastries. Roath Market was raring to go, the queue for Pav's veg was as long as ever.

Tried a new stumbled-across-online dish tonight and it's a keeper. Milk Street's Greek-style braised chickpeas with tomatoes and orange. Admit to upping the orange content for preferred balance but Bold Beans Co.'s Queen Chickpeas made it - thanks again for the reco @gouldina.bsky.social

The last rose of summer.

A bud, now opened, discovered while hacking back some overgrowth. M NL saved it from the trimmings and brought brightness into the house. Thank you, Crépuscule.

They made it home through the rain. Curtains pulled, sofa occupied, wine chilling, cats deployed, @pettigrewbakes.bsky.social's legendary laminated pastries at the ready & all feels well in our corner of the world.

More than five leaves left.

Autumnal low sun shedding light on shed leaves & so many the trees are holding on to. A walk through Roath Mill Gardens is good for the soul.

Lunch with French friends, entrée c/o MmeFF.

Salad of tender green beans, feta & homegrown peach in a honeyed dressing with a tiny touch of balsamic, topped with pine nuts & nigella seeds. Beautifully balanced flavours & textures. Was followed by her blue cheese & mushroom tart with a walnut crust😋

Lunch with French friends, so time to transform the perfect brioche pur beurre we'd bagged into bread & butter pudding made with M NL's Seville marmalade, PX sherry soaked raisins & a touch of cinnamon, topped with demerara & candied peel.

Before & after baking, awaiting vanilla crème anglaise.

Since it's Agatha Christie's 135th birthday today, we've an excuse to post these again - photos of her cookery books taken in the kitchen when we visited her Dartside holiday home, Greenway near Brixham in Devon.

Breads & one set of cakes in the bag, Sunday's patisserie queue was next. It being inside gave the advantage of more time to debate our choices from the ever-tempting array, made easier knowing we'd return. It's what our holidays are for.

Queuing over, we were in; a cheery bonjour to all present & that perfect brioche pur beurre was ours. Une baguette? Bien sûr. Oh, and we couldn't leave without almondy, fruit-studded & icing sugar dusted La Framboisine.

Sunday's bread queue starts early in France & so did we - this time, managed to arrive before the local priest.

Car parking areas alongside urban French shops invite to stop & stare. The edge of this one has been treated gently. Spotted a rogue hollyhock left to bloom as we drove in & a butterfly on the low grassed area when opening the door. We waited until the butterfly flew before heading into Picard.

Greedy Cat's being even more greedy than usual but looks to be losing weight. Off to the vet. Told he was a very good boy having bloods drawn. Results next week, just hoping now that it's something treatable & wishing we could be as relaxed as he is while waiting.

No wonder he loves it!
The one catching Mme's eye was more of a bush variety. Ah, found the photo she couldn't resist taking, the bloom was full to going over but still shone.

That bittersweet leaving day feeling.

You've packed, check the bedroom to make sure you haven't forgotten anything & turn to take in the view from the window for the last time.

Merci France, you captured our hearts & filled our bellies again.

She has every reason to look proud of herself.
Her face and eyes to the sky remind us of our wise friend, Mr Wilkes - 8 yrs a stray, 10 yrs with us happily despite FIV & could read humans like a book. He loved the scent of summer.
