This is why folks have GOT to read Sonic The Comic and approach it with an open mind. The Sonic in those pages is the closest official characterisation we get to this and is why it’s still my favourite interpretation of the character.
My ideal Sonic really is closest to Yusuke Urameshi, though.
Soft on the inside, but a sarcastic little shithead on the outside, who keeps his distance from people because he thinks he's better on his own, only ever actively hurting people who start shit with him or his space.
