1) Today, Jenny Gilruth stated that ‘her team’ had tried to organise a meeting with us several times.

We sent an email on 27th June.

A ‘special advisor’ emailed us 25th July.

This person stated they were not acting on behalf of ‘either John Swinney or Jenny Gilruth’

Willie Rennie is absolutely right – we are angry.
💬 Sick of temp contracts. Sick of instability.

📢 It’s time for permanent jobs for Scotland’s teachers.

This is what contempt for Scotland’s teachers looks like.

A full Holyrood debate on the crisis in teaching — insecure contracts, staff shortages, burnout.

The government benches? Empty.

If this is leadership, every teacher has the right to ask: do they even care?

🚨We FOI’d every Scottish council to find out how many teachers are on supply contracts. Here’s what we found:

2017: 6,052
2018: 6,563
2019: 6,648
2020: 7,137
2021: 8,800
2022: 10,583
2023: 11,027
2024: 11,145

That’s an 84% rise since 2017.

In December 2024, the Scottish Government announced millions in extra funding to protect teacher numbers. But East Dunbartonshire Council admits no detailed planning has been done on how it will be spent.

There are only 7 weeks left in the school year.

When will the planning start?

Thank you to Go Radio for speaking with one of our teachers today about a recent survey we released which shows a majority of the public have seen an impact to our children’s educations through job instability.

🚨We asked over 1,500 people across Scotland what they really think about teacher job insecurity🚨

The results? Unignorable.

This note was written by a pupil, worried their teacher wouldn’t be back after summer.

They were right.

Due to a lack of permanent jobs—and councils’ reliance on casual supply staff and fixed-term contracts—this teacher, like many others, had to leave.

It’s devastating for pupils.

🚨 Shocking decline in post-probation employment in Glasgow 🚨

Since 2020, for primary probationers in @GlasgowCC:

📉 -94.6% drop in permanent jobs
📉 -84.6% drop in fixed-term contracts
📈 +3,317% rise in supply offers

New teachers deserve better than this uncertainty

East Lothian Council confirmed they’ve only had ‘one informal brief discussion/meeting’ with the Scottish Government about teacher numbers since 2022, with ‘no minutes or notes’ taken.

They also state workforce planning discussions ‘are not routinely held’ with the Scottish Government or COSLA.
