Grade 3 teacher at PDSB
After we removed seeds from our pumpkins last fall we counted them, used them to make art and planted some. Being November, we used a grow light and to our surprise (even after a 2 week winter break) some are still growing 😁

Part 5 of creating clothing inspired by early settlers 200 years ago. Students picked a model for their clothing and strutted down a run way. As expected the clothing fell apart, sparking some great discussion.

Part 3 of creating clothing inspired by early settlers in Canada. Students started cutting out pieces to be sewn together to create shirts, pants and hats.

Part 2 of creating clothing similar to early settlers in Canada 200 years ago. Using our paper templates, students cut out their designs onto jute material and learned how to sew multiple pieces together with yarn. @mrschuermann.bsky.social

Why not decorate our pumpkins? My students did a great job painting a black cat, deer, monster and bear.

Once the seeds were out, my students had a hard time deciding how to count the seeds. We discussed what math tools we could use, settling on hundreds charts, ten frames and grouping by tens (skip counting).

Around pumpkin season we cut open some large pumpkins and started investigating. We scooped everything out and then estimated and counted the seeds.

We ventured outside again and collected some soil, sticks and dead leaves to create some compost buckets. We later added some food scraps and did a lot of mixing. We added water and waited for the bucket to break down the food scraps. So far, we have some decomposition.

We love a good experiment! We have been learning about soil erosion and the different horizons (layers) of soil.

Our class is a family! We made bracelets after reading the story with red for kindness, orange for respect, yellow for being ourselves, green for being different, blue is for sticking together, and purple for making memories.
