This is a living memory.

Some residential schools were still open into the 1990s. The survivors hold these memories and those of their parents and grandparents. The Day for Truth and Reconciliation honors their survival and keeps the memory of those who died - until every child goes home

In the 41 years the school was open, nearly 200 of the 10,000 children forced to attend were killed. Since 2017, the Army has made efforts to identity and return these children to their living family or tribes. Those still waiting are buried in a small cemetery on Barracks property

Every year, more unmarked graves are discovered at former residential schools in the U.S. and Canada, such as the Carlisle Indian Industrial School located on what is now Carlisle Barracks where the Army War College is housed. In the past two years, 28+ children's remains have been returned home

The Day for Truth and Reconciliation, aka Orange Shirt Day, is a time to mark and remember the Indigenous, Native American, & First Nations children forced into residential schools, where they were separated from their families, cultures, and languages and subjected to the worst kinds of abuse
