Marsha "Pay It No Mind" Johnson (b. 1945) was a prominent activist of the gay rights movement in NYC. She was on the front lines of the Stonewall Riot and fought for inclusion of transgender and LGBTQ+ people of color in the wider movement. #BlackHistoryMonth

Dr. Patricia Bath (b. 1942) was the first African-American female physician to receive a patent for a medical invention, the Laserphaco Probe. The device created a less painful treatment for cataracts. She eventually held 5 US patents. #BlackHistoryMonth

Roy Clay Sr (b. 1929) was a programmer recruited by Hewlett-Packard in 1965. He wrote the software for the first computer to be sold by HP. He formed his own company in 1977 to manufacture electrical-safety test equipment. He is called the Godfather of Silicon Valley. #BlackHistoryMonth

Professor Robert (Bob) Kent Trench (b. 1940) was a renowned marine biologist. His mantra was, “It ain’t necessarily so.” He believed in deconstructing established beliefs, based on dogma as opposed to fact. His insights remain at the forefront of intense investigation. #BlackHistoryMonth

Seeing Bernice Harrison's daughter turned away from ballet school inspired Joseph Rickard to create First Negro Classical Ballet company. Harrison performed as prima ballerina in the company's first performance in 1946, making her the first American Black prima ballerina. #BlackHistoryMonth

Benjamin Banneker was a farmer and self-didact in astronomy and mathematics. He created a series of almanacs and helped survey a site for the construction of Washington DC. He exchanged letters with Thomas Jefferson advocating for racial equality. #BlackHistoryMonth

Alice Ball (b. 1892) was a chemist who created an injectable oil extract treatment for leprosy. She died at 24, and another chemist took credit for and published her findings. Thanks to her work, dozens of leprosy patients were released from exile after successful treatment. ##BlackHistoryMonth

Herman Branson (b. 1914) was a physicist who co-discovered the alpha helix protein structure and wrote extensively on the physical-chemical studies of sickle cells. Despite deserving a share of the Nobel prize for the alpha helix, he was excluded. #BlackHistoryMonth

Dr. William Augustus Hinton was the first African American pathologist, graduating from Harvard in 1912. He developed a serological test for syphilis that became the gold standard by the US Public Health Service. He authored the first medical textbook by an African American. #BlackHistoryMonth
