The comedic premise of the first panel is "Glasses make people look less attractive." In normal comedy, this would be subverted by the punchline at the end of the strip. This comic places Veronica next to a more attractive nerd girl, subverting its own premise at the START of the strip. Genius.

The man's essentially an admitted pathological liar; I won't believe anything he says about himself unless it's independently verified. Not saying his recent announcement is definitely a lie, but I'm thinking there's about a 75% chance of it.
