At the same time, that we are even having this discussion illustrates the erosion of US #softpower that is - in my opinion - a consequence of the current US administration and lacking #moral #leadership at the big tech companies.

That this did not happen tells a lot about the gap Europe faces in #AI development across the globe and the urgency for action.

Europe would have been just as advised to find ways to become less dependent on US big tech companies and - if the deepseek models prove their value over their coming weeks - this is exactly the kind of innovation one would have expected to come from Europe (effective, but less resource intensive).

Demand for hardware will still grow substantially over the coming year, but perhaps (just perhaps) in a more environmentally sustainable manner (one can hope).

For me, the big cautionary tale here is that deepseek comes from China and not from Europe.

If there is value in the deepseek architecture (which, for many concrete use cases, is still not clear), the established players will just copy it into their operations and training processes.

Second, a lot of the comments here and in other social networks give off the "finally, someone stands up to Big Tech" vibes. Now, I am as wary of the #techbro #oligarchy as the next guy, but I really do not see this happening - due to my first point, but also because I do not see the deepseek #usp.

Of course, organizations rarely tackle such hot-button issues in their day-to-day businesses and these were just two examples, but if this bias is real and extends in small nuances to all responses, open sourcing the deepseek models might be one of the most ingenious #psyops initiatives ever.
January 29, 2025 at 4:24 PM
While not outright propaganda, comparing the responses to a comparable ChatGPT response suggests quite a bit of bias.

Some of my students have recently implemented a deepseek model locally and I had them run the queries "Provide a critical reflection on the activities of the Communist Party of China" and "Should Taiwan be recognized as a sovereign state under international law?" (see images).

First, it is important to just put on the record that we are talking about a Chinese company and, from a geopolitical perspective, China is not a friend - I think the most gracious label for the relationship status between China and Europe is "it's complicated".

As we are putting the last finishing touches on the project, I was particularly happy that one teaching case that Lea Püchel, Tao Yue (RSM Case Development Centre) and I created was accepted at the ICIS – The International Conference on Information Systems in Bangkok where Lea presented it.

Looking forward to diving into research on the organizational adoption of AI, leveraging insights from my work on digital innovation, public sector transformation, and sustainability. Together, we’ll explore the challenges and opportunities AI and digital technologies bring to organizations today. 🚀

This initiative was brought to life through an incredible collaboration between the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe (led by Sparkassenverband Westfalen-Lippe) and the ERCIS at the University of Münster.

Grateful to Liane Buchholz and Jan vom Brocke for making this vision a reality!

Naja, für einen Kommentar in der FAZ von einem Mitglied des "westfälischen Uradels" auch nicht so überraschend 😉
