The assumption that there is an infinite time in the universe (although given the extent of human knowledge - possible) is not important to the illustration.

Don't know about this "strength of the American govt". In the UK, it used to be that you could take your pound to the bank of England and get the equiv. in gold. Since then, it's basically just belief in the "system" to keep it viable.

At base, its belief or rather risk.

Gold does have uses, but a large amount is faith. Normal paper money only has value because people accept it.

You may find faith "less useful" but bitcoin has now proven itself to a large degree.

There IS risk, it could crash, but there are risks in everything, and is a component of the price.
