I contract with an importer. They pay the tariff to CBP, and it gets tacked on to the contract price that I pay. Tariffs for coffee are a new thing, so this is all very... new.

I have Brazil contracts that would have allowed us to walk some wholesale increases back, but with the 50% tariff, they'll result in further price increases this fall. This is coffee contracted months ago, but the "hit" won't happen until fall.

Unlike the oil industry, price hikes in coffee can take a while to trickle down. When I was making purchase contracts in January, it was for coffee that we're going to start using later this month. The tariffs mucked things up more.

Tariffs are starting to hit supplies now. The coffee market jumped $2/lb at the end of 2024, and has only recently been receding. Whatever savings we were seeing from that have been wiped out by the tariffs. With the Brazil tariff jumping to 50%, it's only going to get worse over the next months.

I am a green coffee buyer and roaster. Things are crazy, and have been for the last nine months. We were hoping for some relief when the market dropped a bit, but then the tariffs hit, and will continue to hit. Our average green cost has increased 70% in the last nine months.
