❌💧☕🥪🍜
No food or drink at all in this room, as it's where we have glass cases for our special collections displays, and precious 17th century books!

If you would like to drink some water, you can go into the vestibule outside the room.

3) the Research Collection and Main Reading Room ✒️
✅💧bottled water only

Now on to our no-snacking or coffee-ing areas!

Nice and simple, this rule is because of the many beautiful old books and spaces we have here.

This #TopTipsThursTAY, let's answer the question: can I eat/drink this in here? 🥪🍎

Generally, the answer is no - bottled water only is your best bet! If you're wondering why, see this wonderful poster via our friends at @bodartlib.bsky.social

We do have a couple exceptions though...

Success!

Once there, use the shelf mark to locate the book itself. You should look at each shelf mark a section at a time, and posters can be found in the rooms that help explain how to use them.
October 16, 2025 at 11:09 AM
Once you have located the area you need to be in, you can then use the shelf ends to narrow down which aisle you need to go to.
October 16, 2025 at 11:09 AM
Then use the map to help locate the area of the room you need to be in.

You will notice there are two different sections for French and German. This is because there are two different sequences of these books, which use different types of shelf marks.
October 16, 2025 at 11:09 AM
Each area of the Teaching Collection has a map. Use this at first to determine which shelf mark ranges can be found in the room, to ensure you’re in the right place. Some books may be filed in different way or subject than expected, so you may have to head to the other floor.
October 16, 2025 at 11:09 AM
Go to the floor of the Teaching Collection you'll need. We have trail signs around the building that you can follow to locate the rooms if needed, and we also have a whole building map in the entry hall, and floor plan lists by the lift.
October 16, 2025 at 11:09 AM
If the record says the item is ‘In place’, you can go and find in on the shelves!

You will need to take note of two pieces of information- the location (underlined), and the shelf mark (circled).
October 16, 2025 at 11:09 AM
This will bring up a record of all the copies of the book we own.

Sometimes it will bring up the information you need straight away (left photo). However, if we have multiple copies, you may need to click on each row shown to go through to that screen (right photo).
October 16, 2025 at 11:09 AM
Once you have found the book you would like to use, click on the record. This will bring up a list of all the libraries that own that book.

Click on the one you would like to collect it from- in this case, the Taylor Institution Library.
October 16, 2025 at 11:09 AM
To find a book in any Bodleian Library, you firstly need to look it up on SOLO (make sure you sign in first!)

You can initially search for just the title of the book. However, you may need include the author's name, or use the filters that appear on the results screen, to narrow the results down.
