Hazel’s heart stuttered in her chest. It was the signal. The beginning. The end. A guard stepped closer, his boots crunching against the gravel as he cast a final, dismissive glance at their group. A slow wicked smile stretched across his lips. “Run.” Soren watched her closely as she opened the book, her gaze skimming over the pages. “Remember, folklore often blurs the line between truth and fiction.” Hazel flipped to a random page, running her finger down the aged paper. “So, how do I know what’s real?” He tilted his head slightly, considering. “You don’t.” She scoffed. “Helpful.” His lips twitched. “I mean it. What’s real is subjective. Memory twists, history erodes, and the people who could tell the truth are often long gone.” Hazel’s brow furrowed. “That’s a little bleak.” Soren shrugged, a faint edge in his voice. “Reality often is.” The moment her gaze found him, she smiled, hesitant but genuine, the softest curve of her lips. Heat rose to her cheeks, and she looked away, as if realizing too late that she had been caught staring. Soren's lips curved, an involuntary response he smothered just as quickly, feigning interest in the book before him. He had to remind himself: This is temporary. She is temporary. This moment would pass. She would pass, just as every other had. There was no reason this should be any different. But it was. Her voice drifted, warm and familiar, laced with laughter as she exchanged pleasantries with Lena. He could hear the faint smile in her words, and watched as a strand of hair had slipped loose from behind her ear, and she absently tucked it back. A thoughtless gesture, utterly mundane. And yet, it made something in his chest pull tight. As she waited, she took in the cozy atmosphere—her gaze settling on a man sitting alone by the window. He sat tall, with dark hair falling slightly over his forehead, his sharp features almost carved from stone. A book rested in his hands, fingers idly brushing the edges of the pages. Unlike the others in the room, he didn’t seem at ease. There was something deliberate in the way he sat, as if trying to disappear into the background—but failing.

“Thoryx,” the copper-scaled dragon—Quorys—began, his tone clipped, “is this... wise?” Thoryx raised a brow ridge. “I wasn’t aware that as the lead Keeper I needed your permission to bring a guest.” “It’s not about permission,” the other Keeper, a sleeker, blue-scaled female—Aralyn—interjected. Her voice was calm, but her gaze stayed fixed on Lyric. “You know her reputation. The younglings are impressionable, and her presence—” “—might do more harm than good,” Quorys finished, his tail flicking sharply. “We respect your position, Thoryx, but as lead Keeper, you should know how easily young minds can be influenced.” Lyric snorted, her wings twitching irritably. “I’m right here, you know.” “Yes, we’re aware,” Quorys retorted, unbothered by her glare. “Which is exactly the problem.”
