Still, for all its flaws, it was one of the few things we really did side by side. A vivid, strange, complicated memory. Which is kind of what writing a memoir turns out to be.

If you tried to run a program like that today, there’d be op-eds, lawsuits, and probably a viral video. But back then? It was just another Tuesday.

I picked the name “Red Bear.” My dad picked “Sleeping Bear,” the next one down on the list. Unintentionally perfect.

We wore green felt vests. Earned iron-on patches. And one summer, we marched together in the Clifton Park 4th of July parade—headdress and all.

Now I try to live on purpose.
I practice bass.
I give the kids 5 minutes of undivided attention when I can.
I remind myself that every second is a chance to begin again.
