JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE by Kristin Kobes Du Mez. This book traces the white evangelical church’s descent into Christian nationalism and violent masculinity over the last 75 years. It was well synthesized and compelling. Would’ve loved more exploration of Christian resistance, but still recommend!

The recognition of social and familial labor has been really revelatory for me personally. I’m glad more people are talking about kinkeeping and that ancestral, heavy labor that women have long assumed

HOW HIGH WE GO IN THE DARK by Sequoia Nagamatsu. A novel in interconnected vignettes that starts at the inception of a global plague. Aptly compared to STATION ELEVEN, it shows us what happens in the After and how we retain our humanity through collective care. I read this at the perfect time. 9/10

MONSTRILIO by Gerardo Sámano Córdova. When her 11 year-old son dies, a mother cuts out a piece of his lung and nurtures it to life. Set in Mexico City, Brooklyn, and Berlin. Literary horror is not my usual genre but I really enjoyed this; a beautiful and desperate portrayal of grief. 7/10.

And my favorite album was Tiger’s Blood — Waxahatchee. No one is surprised lol. It feels like Katie Crutchfield is making music specifically for me which is, of course, her genius

My favorite movie I saw this year was Didi. So beautiful and tender and funny. Need to rewatch soon.

My favorite 2024 book was THERE’S ALWAYS THIS YEAR by Hanif Abdurraqib and it’s not even close. This will be all over the end of year lists, and for good reason. I got to speak with him after a reading in Lawrence and thank him for his impactful work and I cried like a loser
