The US, the country with the highest GDP, ranks last or near-last in overall health system performance and health outcomes compared to other high-income countries, despite spending more on healthcare than any other nation. Fixing this begins with affordable care and access. Not making it worse!!

Healthcare should not be a reward for wealth or a W-2 job.

Sending Marines to liberate us…? I went to a play and the pool today.

Protestors shut down the 101 like twice a year. That’s not a riot. It’s inconvenient bc we have to take Pico.

In a world of rapidly developing AI, we really need a health system that isn’t tied to employment.

What’s the point of a massive defense budget when our government just lets us all die of diseases by reducing healthcare, disease information, and defunding disease research …? 🤔

Medicaid saves lives! “The most extensive research on Medicaid coverage to date found that it reduced the risk of death by 21 percent.”

I am one of the 21% who needed life saving care.

Oligarchy looks like getting a sky palace while you kick 13.7 million off health insurance.

House Republicans released a plan late on Sunday (ON MOTHERS DAY) that would cause millions of Americans to lose health coverage and millions more to pay higher fees when they go to the doctor. Half of all new moms in the US get their healthcare through Medicaid.

Not-so-happy Mental Health Month, United Healthcare.
UnitedHealth is the nation’s largest health insurance conglomerate. We obtained what is effectively the company’s internal playbook for limiting and cutting therapy costs.

Revisit this story from our series "America's Mental Barrier," a 2025 Pulitzer finalist.

(Published Nov. 2024)
How UnitedHealth’s Playbook for Limiting Mental Health Coverage Puts Countless Americans’ Treatment at Risk
United used an algorithm system to identify patients who it determined were getting too much therapy and then limited coverage. It was deemed illegal in three states, but similar practices persist…

Love seeing prior authorizations taking center stage in the Reducing Medically Unnecessary Delays in Care Act of 2025! This is a bipartisan issue we can all agree on! I have advocated to end the Prior Authorization process as it exists. Delays & denials are fatal. It’s a step in the right direction!

A f/u to my article in STAT- “Nearly 50% of clinical participants in the name change project saw patients as a barrier to its implementation because they are all reluctant to change.” But there’s no mention of the biggest obstacle to change:

70 million Americans are on Medicaid. But many have no idea they are on Medicaid because it’s rebranded often on the state level or they are enrolled in programs run by private insurance.

I fear too many have no idea the Republicans are trying to take their health resources away.

It’s pretty cool they let a theater major do an article in First Opinion where they tout the “smartest thinkers in life sciences.” I’ll be writing more in my Substack soon about some deeper aspects that matter a lot to me that didn’t fit in the word count including the role of money in this process.

What's a patient to do when they feel unheard?? They write an article in @statnews ! I was deeply frustrated that patients with my disease were not granted a requested listening session during or after a three year project to propose a new name. So I wrote a piece: www.statnews.com/2025/04/18/r...
I don’t know what I’m supposed to call my rare kidney disease
My rare disease has an effective treatment — but no clear name. That confusion has consequences.
