Distantly, I could still hear the whispers and the sirens, and I could summon enough common sense to know that I couldn’t leave this mess behind when I left. “Stop,” I croaked, focusing on the man’s hairline rather than his eyes. “Stop this.” The man slumped, the fight having evacuated his body all of a sudden. His eyes swirled with color, the silver slowly bleeding through as my command took control over…someone else. Something older, larger than me.

REDACTED grinned as he pulled our rental keys out of his pocket. "I've got an idea," he said with the same devilish, devastating grin I usually saw from across the sparring mat. "Wanna get some actual food?" I agreed, which is how - half an hour later - I found myself in a parking lot, in the passenger seat of the rental, eating fast food in a fancy dress. My hair was down, my heels were thrown in the back, and I was desperately trying not to get sauce everywhere. Objectively, this was the best way the night could have ended.

It felt ages away as Shadow murmured, “Siren?” “Yeah, your team called in some backup,” I said, nearly breathless with the effort of keeping constant pressure on his wound. “You’re going to be okay.” “…you came?” he asked faintly. “Of course I came.” Blood welled up through the bandages and I quickly swapped them for the new bunch Defender shoved at me, smearing more of Shadow’s blood across my gloves. “I had to make sure you showed up for our next training session, right?”

The entire room stopped as Theo launched into the whole sordid tale. I tuned him out, mostly; it wasn't like I could forget what had happened. The memory of that night was knitted into my DNA, from the moment my mom walked into the living room with a knife to the moment she screamed, the gold fading from her eyes and leaving her alone with the horror she had caused. She had begged us to run, please run, but we hadn't gotten the chance before the cops burst in, a whirlwind of terror and noise that snatched both our parents up in one go: my mother to prison, and my father's still-cooling body to the morgue. Theo and I were sent to live with Gabriel Caballero, a friend of our fathers, but the sight of our mother's eyes turning that unnatural shade of red-gold still lingered.

I nodded and tugged him toward the door, tossing some parting words over my shoulder: "Stay in your seats, we'll be right back!" None of the passengers responded., but that was to be expected. We moved forward, and I put the next car full of passengers to sleep with one word. Another wave of light, and another layer of backlash was added to my growing headache. The farther we got up the train, the thicker the panic grew; the commands grew easier to say, but the crowds were harder to control, dissolving into silver sparkles on the back of my eyelids. Outside the windows, the countryside morphed into suburbs. The city wasn't far off, and I didn't know how much longer I could hold on. As we approached the last passenger car, Static turned to me. "Are you doing okay?"

Sirensong A snippet I coughed, opening my eyes to a wall of black. Shadow was looming over me, pinning my wrists to the ground. His chest was heaving with every breath. Our legs were still tangled together, and—I noted a little dumbly—he was close enough that I could feel the heat coming off his body and see every carving on his mask. There were barely a few inches of shared air between us. For the first time, I could see Shadow’s eyes. Blue eyes, I realized, feeling my breath leave again. This close, two spots of color shone behind the grease paint and the hood that cast shadows across his face—a stormy grey-blue, reminding me of a turbulent ocean in the midst of a hurricane.

Dress shopping had been an ordeal. I’d spent an afternoon on a steady downhill path as Emily, Kate, and I sifted through the contents of a dress boutique looking for a dress that was just right. The blue dress was too short, the white one was too long, the purple one was too small, the yellow one was too big and it wasn’t even my color. The red was too tight and it highlighted the deep, angry scars covering my right arm, and what was the whole point of this, anyway? I turned, the skirt of my dress swishing around my legs. The dress was as close to perfect as I figured I could get; it was a deep, rich green, with glittering sequins that made it look like I was covered in emeralds. The skirt fell to the floor, with a slit going up to my thigh. Most importantly, it had an asymmetrical collar that folded over my shoulders like a scarf and a sleeve covering my scars.
