If your goal is to pump up your medical bankruptcy numbers, direct to consumer subsidies is a pretty effective way to make this happen.

I’ll bet the major provider orgs (AMA, ANA, Am Hosp Assoc) will come out in force to oppose. They know this would be awful for providers & patients.

People are not good at assessing their risk of illness or injury. All it takes is one serious event to ruin most people financially if they don’t have decent insurance, and sometimes even if they do. Believe me, insurance companies will look for any technicality to get out of paying for high claims.

There’s no “negotiating” with insurance companies for better rates for individuals. This is what exchanges and benefits unions are for!

Hospitals or other providers *might* (but might not) negotiate with you on direct charges if you show some kind of financial hardship, so you don’t go bankrupt.
