Honestly, one of the big questions I have is whether we can biologically even achieve Nirvana, since we'd have to go against billions of years of evolutionary instincts. Maybe that's what's stopping me from taking the next step.

Nirvana takes a LOT of practice and determination to achieve. Trusting a dude from 2500 years ago doesn't provide enough motivation for such a journey. Maybe I was taught different Buddhism to you, but I've learned it all my life as a Sri Lankan. His words don't matter if you don't understand them.
