That this is to desire your death.

I've been so enlightened, moved, educated, inspired and enriched by this book. It also made me cry a lot. Not exaggerating at all.

In the chalky world of Dulux and the colour chart, you remember colour was once bright and precious. There is not a drop of vermilion or ultramarine, congealing today in these rusty cans.

Nothing more depressing and disheartening for a filmmaker than attending an event about film funding and realising this big, glorious country's main film body supports 6 feature films a year.

I just finished this - probably his best book (I've read all of them). I loved how much it reminded me of Iris Murdoch's writing (and I know he's a fan of hers). There's so much I want to say but instead of my words, read his own:

A brilliant, thought-provoking, eye-opening essay by one of my favourite writers, Alan Hollinghurst.
‘The fear that with the right promotion homosexuality might really catch on implies an unconscious conviction that the “unnatural” is natural after all, merely awaiting, in everyone, the licence to blossom.’

A must-read piece from @tigartsakh.bsky.social

Through the deliberate erasure of entire neighborhoods and villages, and the settlement of people with no connection to these places, the Aliyev regime seeks not only to seize physical space but also to manipulate the collective memory of the region.
Recently, Ilham Aliyev visited the Aygestan/Baluja village in Nagorno-Karabakh, where Azerbaijan has settled over 100 families with no connection to the area. In this deeply personal piece, I reflect on what the village means for my identity.
