There is definitely space in the hobby for silly games that don't require thinking (my wife's preferred kind), but I love games like Star Wars Rebellion, Fury of Dracula, Gaslands, LeHavre, etc, where thinking about what to do is built in.

And, just to prove Jay’s point, I think of a mechanic as a function, whereas a rule is how that function is applied and resolved. The mechanic is “roll & move” but the rules tell you if it’s like Monopoly, or like Backgammon.

In that same time period, 50% of my viewership was female (never had more than a few % in that demographic), & 95% of my new views were from Kazhakstan (pretty much exclusively USA, UK & Canada with a few others peppered in previously), so it's not a glitch, just some whacky bot farm activity.

To that I poo-poo anyone’s journey! I think it’s fascinating how different games hold sway over the years. Once upon a time, Catan, TTR, & Carcassonne were the Holy Trinity of the Gateway, but I don’t see that as the case anymore.

Games were old hat for me by the time Settlers came along. When I hear people say that Wingspan, or Scythe, or even TTR was their entree into the hobby, the back of my brain starts playing “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the Shoulder of Orion…” in my head.

As a kid I played all the usual games of the age (‘70s-‘80s), plus my dad taught me cribbage, chess, backgammon & mahjong. But when I acquired the D&D Red Box, that was it. I was pulled down the rabbit hole beyond what my family & most of my friends would play. Now I’m where I am.
