It was signed on 9/17/1787, became the official law of the US in 1789. James Madison addressed the Constitutional convention in 6/1787 "A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty." How little did he know how prescient his words were to be.

The whole idea being that citizens have a right to defend themselves from a federal army that the government could use to oppress its citizens. This is why the right to bear arms is enshrined in the Constitution as the second amendment which was ratified in 1791. The Constitution was written in 1787

Again, you are partly correct. They did object to a standing army.Therefore, they created a system of well-regulated militias to DEFEND citizens from a FEDERAL army. Each state government raised its own militia, which was trained to federal standards.

Indeed-A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed. It was written in the context of concerns about military power & the need to protect citizens from a tyrannical government. It was ratified in 1791.
