In a location with superb views, it was primitive in terms of utilities. Evgenia oversaw renovations that turned it into a comfortable home.
The upper floor of the nearby barn became “the best workroom I have ever had” for Arthur. He could “prance up and down” while composing articles and books.

Our junior school had a pool. 10 x 5 yards, above ground. If you swam all the way round it was 25 yards!
I bought a new cossie when I went to secondary. I showed Pa and he immediately knew - proper Swallows & Amazons savage outfit (regulation black what's now known as boy leg).

Books of Courage & Adventure series has been published for 70 years - 212 volumes. During the previous regime, it was the only place where books by authors Jules Verne, Arthur Ransome, Karel May & Rudyard Kipling were published. New publication maps the history of the phenomenon.

Meander along the banks of the River Bela and you are following the footsteps of Arthur Ransome, where he, his father and grandfather all fished.

I love tha series Swallows and Amazons. I read them all but first was Great Northern! Which pushed me towards birding.
But at the end I thought… „why isn‘t my life like this“ and realised what the class divide was in the UK
