I picked up reading quite early, too but don’t have much memory of how it was taught.
I do remember in primary school which reading books you had access to was restricted based on your reading level. The coveted ‘free reader’ status let you have the run of the library!

My son’s learnt using phonics, I think that’s been standard in the UK since about ‘07

Starting to clear a bit now, actually. I’m stuck at the side of the road with a broken down car, so glad to have a bit of stargazing while waiting for the AA!
