I’m protective of the BBC but now barely consume any BBC content. I glance at the front page for headlines but for detail go elsewhere (like Sam’s blog). I used to wake up to Today and go to bed after Newsnight but not for many years. Is this typical? If so, what’s the future of the BBC?

That makes sense to me.
Gyles - of course it’s a choice. It’s a political choice to have an election and the voters will choose the result.
I don’t share your certainty on the timing or outcome of those choices, but I appreciate you taking the time to engage. Let’s agree to check back in 2030.

I don’t doubt that there are pressures towards reunification, and the polling you shared shows a move in that direction. But a leading indicator of a successful reunification vote would be changes in the voting pattern in NI and I’m not yet seeing that. Because it does come down to a choice- a vote.

Ok I’ve read your earlier thread on polling and scanned the report.
I think you make a key point: “many NI unionists refuse to even acknowledge, never mind discuss, the prospect of a United Ireland.“
I find it hard to imagine NI progressing towards successful reunification when this is the case.

Sorry, I hadn’t seen this response - I’ll look at that. I was talking about the graph in your initial post. But I think my point still holds - if NI was heading to reunification I’d expect the share of these voting blocks to change. Polls are interesting but eventually this will be decided by votes.

Attempting reunification when a large group of the population is implacably against it in an area with a history of political violence would be a recipe for chaos, wouldn’t it?

Support for the unaligned block also looks flat. If I understand you correctly you’re saying that support for reunification is growing amongst unaligned voters, but if that was the case I’d still expect to see some shifts in these lines preceding a successful reunification vote.
