So tonight, on this hallowed anniversary, I have a very special usual Friday night date with the DJ Black Mold show on WWOZ in New Orleans, my floor, and lots of beer and tears. I look forward to it. 💜💛💚⚜️

We’re survivors. We always have been. We always will be.

The second is me in 2025, taking my last picture with Homer before placing him in the recycling can. I cried a lot, but I knew it was time to let him go.

I’ve said before that I am honored- as painful as it was - to have lived that experience with my Gulf Coast people.I still mean that.

The half-assed smile in the first picture belies the agony I was in that very moment. All around me - also unseen in the photo- were literal mountains of the ruined belongings of countless people. The smell was as bad as you can imagine. A piece of me died that day, for sure.

. It was as if he was waiting for me. I didn’t pick it up at first but leaving it behind stressed me out so much that we went back and got him.
Unseen is the big bandage on my left shoulder covering my brand-new Katrina tattoo I got the day before at Electric Ladyland of the Rosenberg’s girl. IYKYK
