I'm not sure that a realpolitik analysis stands up to scrutiny here.
The difference between "this is a winning issue next year" and "this is a winning issue _right now_" (which is where we were a week ago) is hundreds of thousands of actual people losing tens of thousands of actual dollars.

As a Guardians fan currently residing in Wisconsin, the two fan groups I'm most embedded in have different takes today:
Guardians fans: "Well of course the Jays lost, you can only have so many Clevelanders attached before it's a fait accompli"
Brewers fans: "Boy I can't wait for the 2027 lockout."
Guardians fans: "Well of course the Jays lost, you can only have so many Clevelanders attached before it's a fait accompli"
