Average Captain Marryat enjoyer and Franklin Expedition aficionado. Trying hard to do the bluesky thing.

War of 1812 Valentines by others, rated!

River Raisin National Battlefield Park Foundation: 4/10, an attempt was made.

Fort Malden National Historic Site: 9/10, nice aerial view, holiday spirit, funny message.

Well no wonder Canada won this war. 😩

Jumping on Bluesky to share my War of 1812 valentines for the special occasion! ❤️⚔️ Maybe don't send the Brock one to your Canadian friends.

The 2-litre pudding mould I have is SOOOO big, it doesn't even fit in my largest pot. I need to use a cloth to make one of those round puddings, like in 19th century illustrations. (Here's Jolly Old Christmas from the Illustrated London News, 1844).

I love my new job and apartment, but I don't love the tiny kitchen and I never make special recipes anymore. I found a pic of last year's Christmas pudding (my first attempt!) and I'm reminded that it's almost Stir-Up Sunday.

I thought much too hard about this. Anyway I am begging people to watch 'A Desert Between Us and Them'

Trying to get my redcoats to fortify the camp but they keep lounging insouciantly. :/

A few pictures of the Great Lakes freighter museum ship Col. James M. Schoonmaker, which we visited on the 10th of November for "The Fitzgerald Experience"—which did NOT involve sinking with all hands, what museum ship organization can afford that?

Happy Caturday! I'm packing for our traditional Trafalgar Weekend getaway. (Not that we will be anywhere near either Spain or England).

I'll give you the Battle of Lake Erie, but "won the war"? You're about to flood my notifications with Canadians talking about how they defeated the American invasion! (Can't find the meme with a man putting on a hazmat suit to enter the Who Won the War of 1812 Discussion Room).

A really nice marker commemorating the 41st Regiment of Foot in the #Warof1812 and the sacrifice of Private Patrick Russell attempting to protect American prisoners of war.

Today I visited the ruins of Fort Miamis. From the pictures I had seen, I expected the remains of the earthworks to be gentle ripples in the landscape, but they are actually quite steep! It's difficult to show that in pictures.

I keep thinking about a line in the song The Shannon and The Chesapeake: "The people in the port all came out to see the sport."

Huge civilian crowds around Boston Harbor & people in boats tried to get closer! Alas, not the first time the hometown crowd in Boston would be bitterly disappointed.

Philip Broke, recovering in Halifax after the Battle with USS Chesapeake, wrote to his wife Sarah Louisa:

"Oh my poor Loo, what a delight it would have been to have been at home in all this painful nursing, with my gentle and tender wife to watch and soothe me!"

Now the Chesapeake so bold, sailed from Boston we've been told, for to take the British frigate neat and handy, O.

The people in the port all came out to see the sport, and the bands were playing Yankee Doodle Dandy, O.

THE GLORIOUS FIRST OF JUNE!

Is it about the Fourth Battle of Ushant or HMS Shannon capturing USS Chesapeake? Sir John Franklin thought it was the latter! (I think being a War of 1812 veteran is an underappreciated part of his career).

I hope things are resolved for you in a positive way!! Here's my research assistant.

I had so much fun this weekend, but can only think of the moment where I somehow heard Provincial Marines instead of Colonial Marines(???) and was like Oh yes, I know who they are! :)

while the person asking the question looked at me in disappointment & dismay as I scaled new heights of stupidity.

My wife has the pictures of the gun gin and many other things. I wanted to live in the moment but also got some great shots!

I had a peak life experience today at Fort Meigs! A wonderful living history event at a reconstructed War of 1812 frontier fort!! I am extremely blessed to live here.

It doesn't make much sense, especially since Harrison was only about 5'8" and General Brock may have stood as tall as 16 feet.
