man I remember seeing van goghs in person for the first time and realizing how photographs flatten the images and how painters of that caliber would use the way light hits the globs of paint to add texture and variation and depth that portrait lighting destroys

I guess only you know what progress you're making. Creativity is frustrating because it takes a long time to reach quality work worth being proud of. You just have to not compare yourself against the world but look at how you started and where you are now. I'm sure you've gotten somewhere
