I spend an absurd amount of time reading and watching things. Now also teaching myself to think critically about them.
We had an AI-related presentation at work today. A colleague was showing how they use a test-generating framework to help them out with creating some automated/scripted UI checks. Of course, even with the extremely simple scenario, the chatbot disguised as an agent, failed miserably...

My only reading goal for this year (probably one I'm going to fail as well).

The actual freedom seeds, a little gift from Karl Marx Haus in Trier.

Only recently had I realized, how useful can reading manga in the language one's learning be.
Specifically for fluency. Almost exclusively dialogs, short phrases, a lot of vocabulary that's all about reacting immediately to what had happened... (1/2)

After loving "Human Acts" and crying through most of that book, and the inability to enjoy anything about "The Vegetarian" with its copious amounts of familial trauma-porn, I'm back with Han Kang.
"We Do Not Part" is breaking my heart by page 100.

I just played "Idle - The Wealth Race"!

I worked hard and earned £67,131, but The Rich did literally nothing and ended with £525,000 (~8x more).

German translations of movie titles are a little bit... Well.
One of the quite mild, but disappointing examples is "12 Angry Men" to "Die zwölf Geschworenen" which means, essentially, "The 12 Jurors".
Does it need to be this straightforward? Does the subtlety really need to be removed?

The city of Brno is also pretty damn cool.

I went to watch some incredible people race motorcycles in Brno. It was great, highly recommended.

Take a picture, put the phone down and look - for an extended period of time - at the thing you've just photographed.

Sometimes it's good and actually necessary for me to turn to fantasy. And honestly, after powering through a Deutschlandfunk 6-part series about Peter Thiel, who wouldn't want to indulge in a little escapism.

Ok, so this is a thread with my favourite quotes and scenes from "Careless People", that book that Meta doesn't want promoted.

Might get into spoiler territory.
Updating as I'm reading it.

Just hopping on to say that @scalzi.com's "Starter Villain" was a really nice break from reality without venturing too far into the unknown. The only *problem* is that it's so readable, it's really difficult to stretch out for more than three sittings.

Anyway, good book alert. I'm off.

Did they hear about the Streisand effect, though?

It's a sunny day and we do what we can.

Great experience with the start of the trial for @thestorygraph.com premium version.

"No need to add a card, we won't automatically charge you at the end, sign up manually if you enjoy it enough". (paraphrasing, of course)

This is how it should be.

So I just had this "new ad experience" from Meta on Instagram - an unskippable ad break, available exclusively for those of us in the EU, EEA and Switzerland who have chosen less personalised ads.

Uninstalled so fast, it's not even funny.

It's the difference between moving fast and breaking things VS calculating costs, recognizing risks and moving at a steady speed to reach success, isn't it.

They moved fast. They broke the things. Then what?
As Musk was busy blowing up Space X rockets, Europe's new rocket Ariane 6 successfully carried out its first commercial mission, placing a French military satellite into orbit and confirming the continent's independent access to space and further cutting reliance on US systems. #StandWithUkraine

Checklist for next year's Rosenmontag:

- better costume (well, an actual one)
- better German
- learn the history
- learn the songs

It was really fun nonetheless.

I'm reading "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander right now, and from an outsider perspective, the whole thing is finally starting to make sense on a lower level.

It was in the foundation all along.

Protect the rich minority against the poor majority.

No change needed.

Finally, winter has arrived. Hopefully, spring is also just around the corner 🥲
February 14, 2025 at 6:57 AM
This morning I woke up, wondering how long has it actually been since the end of 2024. It feels like forever.
But what does time matter even, in the context of events?

Yeah, I'm just tired, I guess.

There a certain charm in used books, and little notes and dedications like this add a mystery to *not* solve.

I love it.

Since last year, I've been making a point of reading more books by journalists. "Flowers of Fire," "Character Limit," and "The Panama Papers" were my first three choices. All great, but now I'm looking for the next hit.

Any suggestions are welcome.
January 8, 2025 at 6:50 AM
I finished "Flowers of fire" by @hawonjung.bsky.social today. I don't think I've read another book yet that made me almost cry in public so many times.
It's heartbreaking, insightful and inspiring, even for those outside of South Korea physically and culturally.
Highly recommended.
