A decisive day starting here at #COP30. Deeply grateful to all people close to the fire who stopped it quickly, and stayed focused. Also, that many countries, including mine, wrote this letter. And just sending all good hopes to those at the core of negotiations!!

From #ScienceBreakthrough to #PeatlandBreakthrough - from todays's Roundtable on nature-based solutions at the #FallingWalls #ScienceSummit25 to our joint side event at #COP30. Looking forward to it! @alexbonde.bsky.social @umweltstiftung.bsky.social @greifswaldmoor.bsky.social @succow-stiftung.de

Ahead of the EU Council meeting on 23.10.2025, more than 2,000 scientists urge EU Heads of States & Governments to take ambitious decisions for the 2040 targets! With many colleagues, glad to be part of it. @greifswaldmoor.bsky.social doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

Germany runs an ambitious Natural Climate Protection program (ANK). What will it deliver for biodiversity protection? Today we started working on a biodiversity monitoring concept. A lot of tricky questions to be solved! @ufz.de @tumunich.bsky.social @greifswaldmoor.bsky.social @bfn-de.bsky.social

Warsaw Climate Talks are an ambitious, collaborative format of the DE Embassy in Warsaw. This year, it was dedicated to #peatlands! Yesterday farmers, conservationists, scientists & decision-makers discussed about past & future of peatlands in Poland & Germany. And will continue! #peatlandsmatter

Regenerative futures meets paludiculture - thanks for inviting me! Devastating numbers on global climate, repair or despair, an 🐘 in the room, big hopes, timber demand maps, and paludi potentials. About the promise of 'high tech x no tech' I still need to think.

Lesesommer 2025. Lesen tut so gut!

Wenn schon back to work nach den Ferien, dann doch gerne so: Braumeisterschaft mit Hang zum Moor in Stralsund (more to come!), Moderation Abschluss 1. Studentischer Moorkongress in Greifswald & Podium zu Wasser beim Uckermark Kulturfestival in Fergitz. Und überall so viel Energie! Back to work 😃

The 2nd part of my visit to Indonesia was to the peatlands of Kampar Peninsula, Sumatra. Still processing the multitude of impressions! The enormous scale of destruction & restoration was most impressive. The dedication of people at April and at RER. And the sounds of the peat swamp forest at night!

For somebody dealing with peatlands, "Indonesian peatlands" is a very common term. I feel very privileged & grateful to visit them for the 1st time! At IUCN Red List workshop, we have started to work on one for global peatland ecosystems. Much work ahead!

The last 2 days I spent at @eea.europa.eu as part of a European Parliament delegation. Key topics were climate change, water resilience, carbon sinks, pollutants and farming. And penguins! Along with digitisation and simplification. Huge challenges ahead. And really a lot of good work being done!

💐💐💐 @dtv-verlag.bsky.social @bmuv.de @unigreifswald.bsky.social

There are indeed #peatlands in Luxembourg! This is a transitional mire near Hosingen, Wahlhausener Dickt, with Eriophorum angustifolium and Dactylorhiza maculata (Photo credit: Simone Schneider). But I must admit I did not manage to visit a peatland this time... Firmly planned for future meetings!

My first in person Management Board @eea.europa.eu as representative for @europarl.europa.eu. Very glad to work with Prof. Lena Neij & Prof. Louis Meuleman. For our strong and credible European Environment Agency. And for getting a glimpse of Luxembourg's nature with Dr Simone Schneider (SICONA)!

We just celebrated Hans 70th birthday with peatland folks from @greifswaldmoor.bsky.social @unigreifswald.bsky.social @succow-stiftung.de in the Peatland Library! He even recognised our birthday song 😅 (Lyrics: John Couwenberg). Our present: Money for the library, still much needed.

Cities, people & cars: After a couple of days in Paris, my subjective impression is that this city has really succeeded in getting a better place thanks to the restrictions for polluting cars. Quieter, cleaner, safer, healthier. Impressive! #LowEmissionZone #ZFE

And thank you, @boggeddown.bsky.social for a lot of food for thought. And nice cineastic reference 😅 Back to the future of vital mire landscapes!

Over 350 people joined the 'Pact for wetlands' meeting in Poznan today. I am deeply grateful to have been invited as first keynote speaker. Ogromnie dziękuję za ten znak współpracy i zaufania! And yes, this pact should become a pact also for all future wetlands! We need them in our landscapes.
