Taken by New York Daily News photographer Joseph Ambrosini, the only photo published of the first night of the Stonewall uprising shows a scuffle between the street youths and patrons of Stonewall Inn versus the raiding police officers. For me, it's sparked an enduring mystery.

Jackie Hormona was a young hustler in NYC during the late 60s and early 1970s. He's the blond on the left of Ambrosini's photo and was later photographed as part of demonstrations with Gay Liberation Front.

He's one of a thousand unknown heroes from the early days of the modern movement, people who fell away from organized activism in the 1970s. Thanks to his bleach-blond hair and distinctive duds, I notice when he pops up in photos of that era, but after 1971 there's just.... nothing.
