This larger, more advanced design proved to be a better choice. The first dedicated command variant, the Panzerbefehlswagen III Ausf.D1, an upgraded version of the standard Pz III D model was introduced in 1938.

To fulfill this role, the Germans developed the Tank command vehicle class. Initially, a version based on the Panzer I was introduced, but it proved too small for the task. Germany turned to the Panzer III series in the years leading up to World War Two.

Although Wells’ works are not the earliest examples of the genre, they very definitely set the standard for all modern science fiction, and remain some of the most highly regarded works of that variety, even more than one hundred years after they were written.

Porsche’s first heavy tank project, the Panzerkampfwagen VI Typ 100, served more as a testbed for new technologies than a serious contender for mass production. It was a stepping stone in the evolution of German tank design rather than a fully realized combat vehicle.

The project was named SU-2-122. Unsurprisingly, the end product required major changes to the T-34 hull, as well as an array of other drawbacks, and the project never left the drawing board.
