The Broken Road A great road created when the foundation of Bastion was laid and Humanity fled the higher places. Meters wide and made of something like asphalt but white. It stretches from Bastion to Refuge and even farther afield. A day’s walk past Bastion the Road splits and shatters. Most pieces end abruptly where the land splits or twists, but one splinter begins to climb. In the foothills around the valley, it too breaks. Half a day out from Refuge the Road is broken by deadly terrain, for even a Road dies in this benighted land. As Humanity’s light grows dim the Broken Road is the safest, but slowest way from Bastion to Refuge. Max HP is lowered by that amount as long as the Nail is in While Nailed, gain +2 STRENGTH and SOUNDS and LIGHTS pass by harmlessly. Removing a Nail is painful, d6 damage that bypasses armour. Variant Rules: Backpack Management Track your inventory through pictures you draw yourself Instead of keeping track of how much your character can carry in the normal fashion, every Player draws out or is given a 12-by-12 grid of squares. For each +1 STRENGTH a character has, add another 12 square column to one side of the grid. For each +1 AGILITY add 1 row to the bottom. Items take up space. The Game Runner or the rules will tell you how many spaces an item occupies. The Player must draw items into their inventory. The Iron-ice Blight South-east of the BASTION stretches the Iron-ice Blight Crystalline growths of ice as hard and unmelting as iron. Larger than a person, they look like blunt-spiked caltrops placed by a giant hand. A careful person could walk under and around the spines of the Iron-ice and pass through the Blight. Touching a cut to the bitter cold not-metal leads to a painful death. Day 1 Skin grows clammy and waxen Day 2 Knuckle-like growths form under the skin, then crack through as grey-white burs Day 3 Iron-ice erupts from the eyes, destroying them. The mind goes at this point, but some sort of vision maintains Day 4 Finally the release of death arrives. The corpse left behind seems dead of frostbite. For a generation he has sent messages from his Lighthouse by wire and traveller, “rewards for Current”. What he does with the Current and where he gets the wonders he offers none know. The foolish say he eats the current to prolong his life and claim he builds the things he offers though even the Bastion can’t. The Lightkeeper is willing to trade charged Earth Current Canisters for rare pieces of technology. 1 full canister for a Celestial Scourge 3 for an Auphannic Chariot Today the Lightkeeper is (d3) 1 morose He bemoans the state of the things under modern leadership. Getting him to talk is difficult, getting him to help impossible. 2 wistful He longs for when others of his order remained. The time he wastes speaking of what could be isn’t worth the things he lets slip. 3 hopeful He can see the light in the long night. Commitment to causes and promises of aid are easy to get out of him, just hope his mood maintains when it’s time to cash in.
