I wrote a piece about horror movies and job hunting. I don't know if there is a horror movie about job hunting but I don't think I'd want to watch it right now. Unless there's a good one! open.substack.com/pub/areyouex...

Hey all you new follower types, O wrote this weekend a piece about being trapped under a 60lb steel pot of rotting lobster carcasses in a 98 Jetta. How can you afford NOT to read it? open.substack.com/pub/areyouex...

6/6 Comics That Changed My Life: ALAN MOORE, STEPHEN R BISSETTE and JOHN TOTLEBEN's SWAMP THING. I mean. Holy crap did these guys knock it out of the park. Also Ron Randall, Rick Veitch, but the Bissette/Totleben work is just unparalleled, lashed to Moore's thoughtful, literary takedowns of monsters

5/6 Comics That Changed My Life: HOWARD CHAYKIN's AMERICAN FLAGG! There's nothing like Chaykin's amazing graphic design, especially at the time, when its only real match was in maybe Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns, or Lone Wolf and Cub, maybe?

4/6 Comics That Changed My Life: AMBUSH BUG by KEITH GIFFEN - Chaotic, manic, hilarious. And with Giffen's unique gridwork and scratchy art. AND a cameo by Thriller's Scabbard, who got his name for the giant sword he had embedded gnarily in his back skin

3/6 Comics That Changed My Life: GARTH ENNIS' and STEVE DILLON's run on JOHN CONSTANTINE: HELLBLAZER. I loved his work with Will Simpson on Dangerous Habits, that inspired the now-beloved Keanu Reeves movie version, but the Steve Dillon years were just lovely, when they weren't gorily revolting.

2/6 Comics That Changed My Life: THRILLER by Robert Loren Fleming and Trevor Von Eeden. Graphically gnarly, beautifully ugly, and I remember being blown away by the sophistication of the writing, but again I was, like, 16.

Comics that changed my life part five: Garth Ennius’ run on John Constantine: Hellblazer, mostly illustrated by the late Steve Dillon but also Will Sampson and others (going from memory on names)

Comics that changed my life part four: Swamp Thing by Alan Moore, Stephen R Bissette and John Totleben among many other artists. The single greatest horror comic run, ever

Comics that changed my life party three: American Flagg! By Howard Chaplin. Graphically unmatched in the period except maybe by Frank Miller.
December 5, 2024 at 4:55 AM
Comics that changed my life part 2: Ambush Bug! By Keith Griffey. Anarchic mayhem and superb comic art (and a cameo from Thriller’s Scabbard, who had a sword embedded in his back in the most gnarly way)

A bit of a thread about comics that will run through the comics that most inspired a lifetime love of the medium. First up is the insane Thriller by Robert Loren Fleming and Trevor Von Eden. Mind scarring imagery and, for the time, sophisticated storytelling.

Over on Substack, I write about the phenomenon of assholes, and why they are everywhere, including at work and, potentially, in your own home! Link and others at linktr.ee/tangborn

I am writing a piece about arch-nemeses in real life. Do you have an enemy? A personal super villain? Someone who, for whatever reason, has decided that you are their Ernst Blofeld, their Baby Gerald?

Well now, I suppose it helps to plug my Substack without TYPOS. Here's a piece I've been working on for a few weeks. I talk about the democratization of media, corporate consolidation, and how it pays the system more if you fail. open.substack.com/pub/areyouex...

This photo popped up today. Thanksgiving w/ The Posies at our house in Austin 14 years ago. It's blurry, but that's probably the wine. Bass (and one of my closest friends) Matt Harris and drums Darius both gone. I made 3 deep fried turkeys and a turducken. Matt made sure I got a piece of turducken.
