Let's help Clay out here with some math.

The $4200/yr. is for a household. Average SNAP household has 1.9 people. So that's $2210/person.

$2210/year is $184/month, and that's a little over $6. per day.

Clay, let's see you stockpile groceries on $6/day.

Hell, let's see you eat on $6/day.

My inbox has some real gems.

2 things about this:

1. This is how grifters are gonna shift gears for GLP-1s

2. These folks definitely don't read my column

It has come to my attention that it is National Cat Day.

Here is our dear departed Cat, who knew how to live her best life.

Do we burn more total calories with regular exercise, or do we compensate for the expenditure by using fewer calories for resting metabolism (a la @hermanpontzer.bsky.social's book BURN)?

Good news! New study says we burn more calories!

Since Stephan Guyenet isn't here (alas!) I will borrow his graph and point out that our sugar consumption has been dropping for 25 years.

Lots of sugar doesn't help! Lots of us should cut back! But it's not what's causing obesity & disease.

Provincetown has a year-round population of 3600.

I'm guessing there were at least 1000 at No Kings today.

Sorry I managed not to get the people in the inflatable lobster suits!

Generally, fresh foods don't lower meal costs, although I can see why the McCormick's spices CEO would want you to think so.

You know what lowers meal costs? Lentils.

Lentils lower meal costs.

Yeah, that's right. Worse outcomes, at least a little, on the UPF diet. (Note: "trending toward" = "not statistically significant.")

Also, they found that CRP (a marker of inflammation) increased on the minimally processed diet, but they didn't mention that til the discussion section at the end.

You know all those journal articles that say "data available on request?"

It's mostly bullshit.

Only 17% of articles claiming it actually delivered the data.

@ianhussey.mmmdata.io reports.

There's a procedure called duodenal mucosal resurfacing, which basically zaps the lining of the small intestine. Here, patients who got it after discontinuing a GLP-1 maintained their weight loss and even lost a bit more.

Oooooh tricky!

Notice anything about California's definition of ultra-processed foods?

That's right! In order to be a UPF, food has to meet a definition that has nothing to do with processing.

They need that because PROCESSING HAS ALMOST NOTHING TO DO WITH FOOD QUALITY.

Terrific @scientificdiscovery.dev post on randomized controlled trials in @ourworldindata.org.

Including this important chart on the impact of pre-registration.

Magically, when people had to pre-register outcomes, many of the benefits disappeared.
