The #SocialMediaBan (or #SocialMediaDelay if you prefer) just got very real for hundreds of thousands of Australian teens under 16 who got messages in the last 24hours saying their Instagram (or, for a few, Facebook/Threads) accounts are flagged to be deactivated in the coming weeks.

I enjoyed being interviewed for this podcast, which gave me space to outline what I think about the social media ban/delay for under16s in Australia + what young people & parents, carers & trusted adults in their lives need to think about *before* December 10th!

Watching the promotional material for Apple's new AirPods, it's notable just how much #accessibility is being positioned as the terrain big tech wants to colonise, and in the long-run, personalise, locking users into their ecosystem.

I had a good chat with Natarsha Belling on The Briefing Podcast today discussing the Age Assurance Trial results and what that means for the government's under16 social media ban. #auspol

Josh Taylor in The Guardian notes that actually looking at the data from the Australian Age Assurance trial shows some big problems!

Not just under-16s: all Australian social media users will need to prove their age – and it could be complicated and time consuming

Today I had my first experience of seeing a paper (and to be clear: a research paper, not a student paper) cite a paper I'm a listed author on where that paper does not actually exist.

It's clearly an AI-generated fabrication.

Outside my comfort zone, but I was really pleased to be a plenary speaker at the National Suicide Prevention Conference #NSPC25 on the closing panel AI & eSafety with Louise La Sala (Orygen), Carla Sargeant (Headspace), and Jacqueline McGowan-Jones (WA's Commissioner for Children and Young People).

Ah yes, thanks Facebook for suggesting I celebrate 11 years friendship with my very loved and very missed grandad who passed away several years ago.

When I'm voting in the Australian Federal Election tomorrow, I know what I don't want.

I don't want a party planning nuclear power stations in a country awash in renewables.

I don't want a party that puts One Nation number two on their voting cards.

I know who I'm putting last. #Liberal

Ozzymanreviews isn't on Bluesky yet, but I do believe his reaction to NeoNazis interrupting a Welcome to Country at ANZAC Day (or any other time) is the most appropriate: NeoNazis can fuck right off.

My heart broke a little when the my uni library ebook platform, Proquest eBook Central, came at me with a baked in AI Research Assistant that blurted a key takeaway/concepts rather than letting me read.

Appropriate somehow it was @andrew-mcstay.bsky.social's Emotional AI book!
