There's an active discussion over this at hackernews, some people are upset over the fact that some dataset wasn't anonymized.

Federation is the way to go, if you don't agree with the philosophy of one instance, you can just hop around.

I don't think it'll solve scaling issues tho, if this became a mainstream platform most normies won't self host. Unless you put users into instances at random or some round robin fashion

Frr, and I'm hoping they can open it up even more. It's still not federated like mastodon and others. You can run your own PDS as of now though.

I also wonder how they're gonna fund this as it scales 🤔

All good things go to shit once they get big enough. True for many social medias.

There's high hope for bluesky tho!

That's strange, I thought you could just search the number and tap chat without having to save the number or share contacts.

Here's a screenshot, just click start a new chat and type the number in your search.

Exactly, I'd give them some time to improve this now that there's some traction

That's precisely what I mean, putting the user in charge is a barrier.

Hopefully they can improve the interface to easily do this. It is a hard problem at the end of the day. And right now I see a lot of what I don't like on my discover feed.

It just has a certain barrier of entry.

With Bluesky I have to put in effort to curate and get a feed I enjoy. Pros and cons ig.

Currently I mostly see American centric posts about right vs left but I don't care about those stuff and a smart algorithm would remove it automatically.

Oops, you're right, what I really meant to say is long term traction!

I saw the 20 million figure and immediately downloaded bluesky again, it's certainly impressive. Alot of posts seem like people are in a honey moon phase with it (I am too)

Let's see how things pan out

The problem is the network effect, I'm hoping bluesky gains some traction. I just installed it after seeing the sudden influx on the news!

I wonder how they're going to sustain it in the long term though
