A psychic crown is not a simple communication method, though it is that too. It allows a human access to the aliens as if they possessed the same ability as them. Meaning they can feel involuntary and alien thoughts not being directly transmitted, which can be very difficult to interpret.

Much of this has to do with the natural randomness in what alien is contacted.

A member who contacts The One Who Comprehends will find curiousity and joy meeting them. A member who contacts the One Who Commands would instead find cold calculation and restrained violence waiting to be unleashed.

Many members of the Brigade are former Temple organizers, people who may have had the opportunity to use one of the psychic crowns and feel or even talk to the aliens. They cannot deny the reality of the message, they can only interpret it as something else entirely.

Most members who get disillusioned with the Temple simply stop believing and leave, being shunned by the temple as apostate. It takes a very specific kind of person to still believe in the Temple's message and prophecies, and simply decide to fight against it instead.
