May I offer something? "They" are afraid, too. Mostly of the wrong things, but they are afraid, too. And maybe because I'm "of a certain age" I'd recommend a "fuck it" approach to the fear.

If you are a public employee there may be a clause in your union contract that also protects activities outside the workplace.
