"more people coming into conflict with the law"—as though "the law" exists as just the natural, apolitical state of things, and "people" then are then choosing to act out for whatever reason, however sympathetic their motivations for that acting out

every day, policymakers, police, prosecutors, judges, prison guards, etc. etc. make the active choice to arrest and jail more people. to put it on "mental health," etc., is just a way of blaming criminalized people for the state's violence against them instead
