Aside from the creepiness of relying on robots to “proofread your thoughts” - the environmental implications alone of AI should be enough for you to not use it

What does that even mean?

Is this a parody account?

The argument is that Democracy is not and should not be as simple as governance by ballot measure, and yelling anti-democratic! during representative governance when you don't like the result is weird.
June 24, 2025 at 4:44 PM
I actually disagree. As an LGBTQ person who has had my rights voted on by popular vote, representative democracy can serve as an important safeguard against majoritarianism where minorities can often be harmed. Democracy is not simply governance by popular vote.
June 24, 2025 at 4:25 PM
That's true. Point taken. I still think it's weird to refer to a elected body making laws as anti-democratic.
June 24, 2025 at 4:10 PM
Not a bot. Not a libertarian. Just think PFA was poorly constructed in funding and administration and needs a do over, and I voted for it in 2020.
June 24, 2025 at 4:09 PM
Reminder: the state legislature is not "anti-democratic" - it is an elected body. Counties are extensions of state government and operate under authority granted by the state legislature. Stop gaslighting us.
June 24, 2025 at 4:04 PM
Counties are extensions of state government and operate under authority granted by the state legislature. Local governments levying personal income tax for education, targeted or otherwise, have not been found to be lawful unless applied statewide or approved by the legislature. See ORS282.115
June 24, 2025 at 3:59 PM
It's not that outrageous. It's lawful. Counties are extensions of state government. OR282.115 passed in '05 after a similar effort in Portland, prohibiting local governments from levying personal income taxes for educational funding unless it is applied statewide or approved by the legislature.
June 24, 2025 at 3:50 PM
This is supported by case law, and is an important feature of representative democracy, guarding against some of the features and potential harms of majoritarianism. It’s actually democracy. You are represented by state senators, as am I. Democracy is not simply governance by ballot measure.
June 22, 2025 at 2:08 AM
That’s actually untrue. While Oregon is one of the few states that doesn’t require statewide legislative approval when counties levy personal income tax, it has jurisdiction over county services, as counties are extensions of state government, esp when those services are duplicative.
June 22, 2025 at 2:05 AM
Dude, what is antidemocratic about a state legislature? It's literally an elected body.
June 22, 2025 at 1:15 AM
The state legislature is not a “back door channel.” It’s a governing body elected by … voters
June 21, 2025 at 5:47 AM
This is misinformation. The PFA tax is levied on individual income in excess of $125,000 and $200,000 jointly.
June 20, 2025 at 6:11 PM
Is the leadership in the room with us now?
April 25, 2025 at 2:54 AM
It’s not that wild. I don’t think a majority should be able to vote on the rights of a minority, be that human rights or in this tax policy. The referendum system adopted by some local and state governments can undermine representative democracy. Minority groups are often harmed by Majoritarianism.
April 6, 2025 at 5:24 AM
Funding pet projects by mob rule is not good tax policy. A sustainable and fair way to fund universal preschool would have been to have it passed by an elected body and placed into the county budget. This experimental ballot measure tax scheme by the DSA and JVP is going to backfire. It’s too bad.
April 6, 2025 at 2:11 AM
jfc. I did not say that. I literally said “Communities aren’t defined by lines on a map.” You can perseverate on districts, but communities do exist outside these boundaries. Can you please social media troll someone else?
March 15, 2025 at 1:20 AM
Great, but community is more than districts and that was the reference. People from all districts are allowed to engage with city councilors.
March 14, 2025 at 10:21 PM
I’m aware, but Communities aren’t defined by lines on a map. We live in the same city. I work in District 1.
