I think she wanted the relationship as long as she was in full control of it at all times, so she’s upset that she lost the only person she let into her private life because her control failed.

Work for hire (they own it) should cost more than an art commission where you retain rights. I don’t illustrate but I would guess at least a few hundred $ from the info here (estimate your hours when you come up w a project price, rate should be at least your day job’s pay + 30% for taxes & hassle).

I think you need to request more specifics - exactly how many figures, how complex the detail, are you illustrating a concept from scratch or adapting existing art? The client owning it gives them major side benefits (they can reuse/license/sell the art without involving you).
