This is why I tend to advocate for having dedicated search engineers for creating mappings and queries. Search engines aren't databases

This is like my 3rd time doing work like this because it feels like every time I want to ship something cool there's like a pile of "other things" that I don't want to wait for others to fix.

This means having several indexes with the same data but routed differently.

For example, an index for issues that is routed off participating user such that a user is able to search for issues they created, are participating in, were mentioned in, while only hitting a single shard.
