Clearly a significant minority of Albertans are willing to entertain separation, but the support for leaving is also much softer than it is for us to remain part of Canada. I get that separation is a dramatic idea and gets clicks, but I wish journalists would use judgement in their coverage of it.

He also paints a picture of momentum for the separation movement that I don't think is evident from the data. The pre-election poll asked a different question and didn't differentiate between definite/leaning.

That's a pretty misleading interpretation of this polling data...

1/3 of UCP supporters and 19% of Albertans overall would vote to take Alberta out of Canada. Another 1/3 of UCP and 17% of overall are open to the idea, but not yet sold.

Meanwhile 52% of Albertans are firmly against the idea.

A few years ago, I had a long conversation with my father-in-law (a retired pipeline engineer) about his frustration with the legacy of the NEP and how eastern Canada treats Alberta.

During this recent election his frustrations were aimed at those stoking western alienation.

The shift is real!

I think it is less the management triangle and more this meme. There is clearly a right answer, we just need to pick it.

Option 2 feels like only upside...

The ON PC wing of the party will definitely have something to say if he tries to stay on. I expect a Kory Teneycke victory lap through the media circuit any day now.
